The Question
How do you open yourself again when you've forgotten how?
The Spark
Craorag began with a simple melody that arrived as I was falling in love with the woman who would become my wife. More than a love song, it became an attempt to translate the experience of opening myself to another person again after believing I no longer knew how. Everything that followed grew from that feeling.
The Journey
Craorag begins before the story itself.
The opening orchestral statement offers fragments of the themes to come, as though the emotional landscape already exists before a single step has been taken. It isn't a destination. It's a promise.
That promise gives way to a solitary piano.
The music becomes intimate, almost hesitant, introducing the main melody in its simplest form. After the scale of the opening, the quietness feels intentional. Vulnerability rarely announces itself loudly.
As the piece unfolds, the melody begins to breathe.
Space opens around it, allowing the themes to grow before the first guitar solo enters.
To me, that solo represents something more difficult than falling in love.
It represents opening myself again after believing I no longer knew how.
For that I needed someone else - an outside perspective.
I could think of no one better than my friend Adam Iacarino to give that emotion a voice.
The second half of the piece shifts into a steady, almost processional rhythm.
Not a march toward victory, but toward trust.
Healing is rarely dramatic.
More often, it is a series of deliberate steps taken despite uncertainty.
The second guitar solo lives within that new rhythm, exploring what it means to move forward without knowing exactly where the path leads.
In the closing moments, the opening melody returns once more.
What began quietly on the piano is now carried by the confidence of everything that has happened since. As the music opens back into the reimagined orchestral world introduced at the beginning, the promise and the journey finally become one.
