The Question

What holds us together when we're being pulled apart?

The Spark

When I first wrote The Thread, I believed I was bringing something to an end.

Life had other ideas.

Returning to the piece wasn't about changing what it said. It was about finishing something I wasn't ready to finish before. In many ways, it became part of my own healing.

For a while, it was music that belonged only to me.

Eventually, it became something I was ready to share.

Completing the piece and releasing it felt like finally allowing other people to see something that, until then, I had carried entirely on my own.

The Journey

The Thread begins without hesitation.

The principal theme is introduced immediately, supported by a steady guitar line that quietly persists beneath the melody. From the outset, the music establishes a sense of forward motion, as though an unseen force is carrying the listener onward. The supporting line remains constant, becoming the thread that connects every stage of the journey.

As the melody unfolds, it gradually transforms into a guitar solo. Rather than feeling like a departure, the solo grows naturally from the theme itself, allowing the music to become increasingly expressive before a sudden shift changes the emotional landscape entirely.

The arrangement strips away its momentum.

Only bass, drums, and synthesizer remain, creating an atmosphere filled with uncertainty and tension. It feels suspended, waiting for something inevitable to emerge.

What follows is the emotional center of the piece.

Two guitars begin a conversation that quickly becomes an argument. One voice answers the other, neither fully overcoming the other nor surrendering its position. To me, these opposing voices represent the conflict that exists within all of us—the parts of ourselves that pull us toward hope and despair, courage and fear, acceptance and surrender. The music never declares a winner because those conversations rarely end so cleanly.

Eventually, the argument gives way.

The opening theme returns, this time surrounded by far more space than before. After the intensity of the confrontation, the reprise feels almost like taking a breath. Familiar music is heard through a different emotional lens, no longer untouched, but transformed by what has come before.

Suddenly, the rest of the band rejoins the melody.

For a brief moment, it feels as though the music has found solid ground. But certainty remains elusive. The composition shifts once more into a fractured rhythmic landscape where a hopeful guitar line reaches forward while continually catching against and flowing with the uneven pulse beneath it.

The journey closes ambiguously.

The final ideas remain unfinished, suggesting that healing is rarely a single moment of arrival. It is an ongoing process, one that continues long after the music has faded.
